Overview
As of the first half of 2024, Zimbabwe has seen a notable increase in criminal activity, with a variety of offenses being reported across the country. During the reporting period, a series of significant criminal activities were reported across various regions, including Harare, Chinhoyi, Penhalonga, Madlambuzi,Mwenezi, Ruwa, and Beitbridge. The crimes included cases of unlawful entry, theft, armed robbery, and possession of illegal firearms.
Trends and Modus Operandi:
- The crime trend analysis suggests a shift toward more residential targets, with incidents often occurring during late-night hours, typically between 1800 and 0500 hours.
- Armed robberies have become more organized, often involving. These incidents typically involve the use of firearms, especially in cases where cash is targeted.
- Weak perimeters and unmaintained security systems are significant vulnerabilities, leading to higher success rates for criminals.
- Homes and businesses known to handle large sums of cash, particularly those not utilizing banking systems are the usual targets.
Incident Breakdown
Unlawful Entry and Theft
- Aspindale, Marimba, Harare (01/07/24): Unknown suspects broke into a supermarket at around 0200 hours through the roof, tampered with CCTV monitors, and stole US$50,000 from two safes.
- Mazari, Chinhoyi (06/07/24): Suspects gained entry into a church office, broke the safe, and stole US$35,000. A burnt fuse and explosive residue were found at the scene.
- Chinhoyi CBD (08/07/24): A parked vehicle near the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development offices was broken into. Unknown suspects broke into a parked vehicle and stole US$15 200.00 cash whilst the driver was concentrating on other issues.
Robbery
- Mberi Village, Mutasa, Penhalonga (08/07/24): Five suspects armed with machetes attacked three victims, stealing US$15,000, 20 grams of gold, and various clothing items and fled in the victim’s vehicle. The suspects attacked the victims with weapons sustaining injuries and were referred to a hospital in Mutare for treatment.
- Beitbridge Bound Bus, Vilivili Bus Stop, Harare-Beitbridge Road, Mwenezi (19/07/24): Five suspects armed with a pistol and knives, robbed a Beitbridge bound Blue Circle Bus at Vilivili Bus Stop along Harare -Beitbridge Road in Mwenezi. A suspect was arrested in connection with the armed robbery.
- Damafalls, Ruwa (20/07/24): Four masked suspects armed with a pistol, hammer,and logs broke into a house, assaulted the occupants and stole US$730.00, a Mercedes Benz E300, and various other items. The suspects ransacked the house and took car keys for a Mercedes Benz E300 vehicle and a suitcase containing various clothes. The suspects loaded the loot into one of the victims’ vehicles and drove away.
- Mandara, Harare (31/05/24 and 23/07/24: Two suspects involved in multiple armed robberies were arrested, with a significant cache of stolen items and weapons recovered. Among the recovered items were a CZ 75 SP-01 pistol, relay air gun, .44 Magnum revolver, Grand Power 9mm pistol, eight 9mm magazines, 1,000 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 28 rounds of .303 ammunition, nine Magnum rounds, and a bulletproof vest. The suspects are linked to a robbery on May 31, 2024, where USD 15,000, four firearms, and jewellery were stolen. They are also connected to a robbery in Mandara on July 23, 2024, where USD 1,000 in cash and valuables worth USD 1,000 were taken. One suspect was fatally shot during a shootout with police.
- Leopold Takawira Street, CBD, Harare (28/07/24): Five suspects attacked a security guard on duty at around 0230 hours at a shop along Leopold Takawira Street. The suspects broke into the shop and stole US$10,000, ZiG 300.00, and some documents.
- Railways Wagons Strips, Kenneth Kaunda Road, Harare (Date unspecified): Three suspects pepper-sprayed a complainant and stole US$7,000. The complainant had hired a taxi from Road Port to Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport and went to the area to relieve himself. He was attacked in the bushy area along Kenneth Kaunda Road, Harare and the suspects fled with the money.
- Coventry Road, Workington, Southerton, Harare (30/07/24): Twelve suspects entered a warehouse along Coventry Road. The suspects attacked three security guards who were on duty at the premise before stealing US$25 115.00 cash and a laptop.
Illegal Firearm Possession
- Madlambuzi, Maitengwe (09/07/24): A suspect was arrested for illegal possession of a Beretta Pistol loaded with seven live rounds. The suspect failed to produce a firearm certificate and claimed that he bought the firearm abroad for self-defence.
Murder and Robbery
- Hillside Road Extension, Msasa, Harare (16/07/24): Three suspects entered a construction complex through an unlocked gate. The suspects attacked six complainants including the security guard with logs and steel bars. The suspects stole US$ 95.00 and four cellphones before fleeing the scene in their getaway car. The security guard succumbed to the injuries sustained during the attack.
Analysis and Trends
- Increase in Robbery Cases: There was a noticeable rise in armed robberies across the regions, particularly in Harare, with multiple incidents involving significant amounts of cash and other valuables being stolen.
- Use of Firearms and Explosives: Several cases involved the use of firearms and an incident in Mazari, Chinhoyi, involving explosive devices. This indicates a trend towards more aggressive and violent criminal activities.
- Targeting of High-Value Locations: Criminals appear to be targeting locations with high-value assets, such as supermarkets, churches, and private homes with substantial cash holdings. The criminals appear to have insider knowledge about the amount of money held by the victims because they are able to getaway with large sums of money.
